Help with ordabok.is
Common issues
How can I make ordabok.is easier to work with?
There are some very good tricks to make ordabok.is more streamlined for your needs. These can be divided into two parts: A) Quicker startup and B) Quicker use.

A) Quicker startup
To make it easier for you to start up the dictionary each time, a quick access button in your browser is the answer. The instructions below will allow for your personal taste in browsers.
  • Open your browser and go to http://www.ordabok.is.
  • Open the View menu and select Toolbars. In Chrome select the wrench at the top of the screen and then the Tools submenu. The menu item Links or Favorites should be checked. In Netscape the menu item is called Personal Toolbar. In Firefox it's called Bookmarks Toolbar. In Opera the menu item's name is Bookmarks bar. In Chrome select Always show bookmarks bar.
  • Click on the page icon to the left of the address http://www.ordabok.is and drag it to the toolbar (Links, Favorites, Personal Toolbar, Bookmarks or Personal bar).
  • You can also drag the idon to your Windows desktop. To effect that, just drag it down to the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. When the pointer is on the right side of any open program icons, Windows will minimize all windows, at which point you can drag the pointer on to the desktop and release the mouse button to place the icon there.
  • The next time you have to open the dictionary page, click on the button for it in your browser. Or click the icon on your desktop.
B) Quicker use
Once you have opened the page http://www.ordabok.is there is really no need to close it. It's good practice to maintain some open windows for various programs or sites at the same time, especially if you make use of them often during the day. In order to go back to the dictionary page, while you're working in another application, for example Outlook or Word, you can do either of the following:
  • Hold down the Alt key while pressing the Tab key to switch between programs.
  • Click the button for ordabok.is in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.
I'm a subscriber and need access. What do I do?
  • Go to the ordabok.is home page and select Login, or click here.
  • Enter your access codes. If you don't have them, you can click a link on the login page to get them.
I'm having difficulties connecting to my subscription
Start by logging out from ordabok.is on your computer, in case there is an old subscription getting in the way. This can be easily done by the following:
  • Use the Log out option at right of the screen in ordabok.is.
  • Close the browser (i.e. Firefox or Internet Explorer etc.). Also close all other browser windows that may still be open.
  • Reopen the browser and go to ordabok.is. Select Login and enter your access codes. Please make sure that you're using the right set of access codes. These should be the ones that you received the last time you created or renewed your subscription, or asked for the access codes to be sent to you. You can have them resent here. It is best to use Copy and Paste when entering the codes, instead of typing them letter by letter. This means that you copy each code from the email message that contains them and then paste each in turn into the proper field on the login page.

Is it necessary to log in every time one visits ordabok.is?
If cookies are enabled in your browser, you shouldn't need to log in with your access codes every time you visit the dictionary. Cookies make it possible for the site to check if you've already logged in once before, and if so, you'll get immediate access. It should be noted that ordabok.is will not use cookies to store any personal information, neither name, e-mail address, user name, password nor anything of that kind. The only thing that the cookie retains is the database user number. If you find that ordabok.is requires you to log in every time you want to open the site and look something up, you should check if cookies are enabled in your browser.
In Chrome 19 cookies are enabled as follows:
  • Click the spanner icon on the browser toolbar.
  • Select Settings.
  • Click Show advanced settings.
  • Under Privacy, click the Content settings button.
  • Under Cookies, set to "Allow local data to be set (recommended)".

In Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8 and 9 cookies are enabled as follows:
  • Open the Tools menu or click the sprocket icon on the toolbar and select Internet Options.
  • Click the Privacy tab and set the slider to any other value than "Block All Cookies."
  • Close all Internet Explorer windows. The setting will take effect next time the browser is started.
In Netscape 8 cookies are enabled as follows:
  • Open the Tools menu and select Options.
  • Click the Privacy item from the list.
  • Click the Cookies item.
  • "Keep Cookies" should be set to "until they expire" or "ask me every time."
In Firefox 8, 9, 10 and 11 cookies are enabled as follows:
  • Open the Tools menu and select Options.
  • Click the Privacy icon at the top.
  • Open the pop-up list "Firefox will."

  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • Click on Cookies in the sidebar at left.
  • Click on "Accept cookies only from the site I visit."
If the above procedure doesn't solve the problem, please try this.
Can the access codes be changed?
Not everyone is equally happy to receive a password like hbwjiejc when they sign up for the access to ordabok.is. But dispensing access codes that are generated automatically speeds up the process of creating a subscription. The codes can then be later modified on the Control Page. It is only necessary to enter the codes the very first time you log on to the site.
I have paid for the subscription, so why can't I access the dictionary?
The reason is probably that you're using an account other than the one that you have paid for, perhaps an expired trial account. In order to use the right account, please go to the ordabok.is home page and select "Login". You can also go directly to this address.
Can I change the email address that I originally submitted to ordabok.is?
Yes. Please visit the Control Page.
Can access be prevented on a given computer?
There are two ways of preventing access to ordabok.is on a given computer. To do it on the user's computer, select the menu item Log out. Access can also be prevented remotely, on the Control Page. Under Users identify the line representing the user to block. Then click the checkbox under the Access or Delete heading.
On how many computers can one access ordabok.is?
Individuals can use ordabok.is on a maximum of three computers. If the user has reached the maximum number and wants to gain access on a fourth computer, he must delete one his previous access logins. This can be done on the Control Page. Companies can purchase any number of user licences with the network edition. Each of the users who are given access can then use the website on three computers, provided that the user logs in with the same e-mail address on each of them.
What's the difference between Control Page and Options?
The Control Page is only meant for whoever is in charge for a given subscriber's account. Accordingly, ordabok.is gives the subscriber separate access codes for the Control Page. This means that not every user under the account can make changes to settings concerning the account. The Options page on the other hand is meant for individual users, who can use it to set various preferences such as font size and more.
What do I use the menu item Log out for?
The menu item Log out can be handy for those who need access to ordabok.is from a new site and temporarily use one user licence for that purpose. It's particularly handy when logging in to ordabok.is at the computer network in school or in an Internet caf, a library etc. The user logs in to ordabok.is with his access codes. When done using the website he selects the function Log out to free up the licence that he used at that workstation, thereby preventing other users from exploiting his access. If the user forgets to log out from the access, he can easily delete it from another computer by going to the Control Page.
How can I control automatic renewal?
When creating or renewing a subscription, a special option controls whether the subscription should be renewed automatically the next time it runs out. This can also be changed on the Control Page.
Mlfar doesn't show in the Tools or Add-Ins menu in Word
Normally, Mlfar will appear in the Tools or Add-Ins menu in Microsoft Word right after installation, but in some rare cases it does not. Use the following method to fix that:

Procedure 1
  • Open the Tools menu in Word and click on Templates and Add-ins. If you're using Word 2007 open the Office Button at the top left corner and press the Word Options button. Select the Add-Ins link from the left column and open the Manage listbox at the bottom of the dialog. Choose Word Add-ins and press the Go button.
  • If the Malfar.dot file is in the list you can check it and press OK.
  • If the list Global templates and add-ins contains the item Malfar.dot, make sure that it's checked. Then press OK. If it does not contain the item, press the Add button and find the Mlfar folder on your system, probably under Program Files. Select the file Malfar.dot and then press OK.
  • Close Word and open it again.
  • If you can now see Mlfar in the Tools or Add-Ins menu, the procedure was successful.
